The "Impact Language" Formula

The best performance review language follows this structure: Action + Context + Measurable Result.

  • Not "managed the client project" → "Led a cross-functional team of 5 to deliver the client portal 2 weeks ahead of schedule, resulting in contract renewal"
  • Not "helped with onboarding" → "Redesigned the new hire onboarding process, reducing time-to-productivity from 6 weeks to 3"
  • Not "improved team communication" → "Introduced weekly async updates that eliminated 4 hours of status meetings per week across a 12-person team"

The Brain-Dump Prompt

Start messy — don't try to write it perfectly. Tell ChatGPT everything you did, even the small stuff:

"I'm writing my annual performance review. Here are the things I did this year in rough, unpolished form: [list everything — even small things]. Help me turn these into concise, impact-focused bullet points using strong action verbs. Where I haven't mentioned results, ask me questions to help me draw them out."

The back-and-forth where ChatGPT asks you questions often uncovers accomplishments you'd forgotten or undervalued. "How many people did that affect?" "What was the result of that change?" are questions that reveal measurable impact hiding in your everyday work.

Preparing for the Salary Conversation

Once your review is drafted, use AI to prepare for the follow-up conversation:

"Based on these accomplishments, help me prepare for a salary negotiation. What's the strongest case I can make for a raise? What objections might my manager raise, and how should I respond to each one?"
