LESSON 1 OF 5 ยท PERSONAL FINANCE

Use AI to Build Your First Family Budget โ€” No Spreadsheets Required

โฑ 10 min For Everyone ๐Ÿ“ Blog ๐Ÿ”ง Rocket Money ยท ChatGPT

Most families don't have a money problem โ€” they have a visibility problem. You earn enough, but money keeps disappearing and you're not sure where it goes. The fix isn't a complicated spreadsheet. It's a 10-minute setup that shows you exactly where every dollar is going.

Step 1: Download Rocket Money

Rocket Money (formerly Truebill) connects to your bank accounts with read-only access โ€” it can see your transactions but cannot move money. Once connected, it automatically sorts your spending into categories: groceries, dining out, streaming services, utilities, and more.

Most families are surprised by two things when they first see the breakdown: how much they spend eating out, and how many subscriptions they forgot they had.

Step 2: Find the Leaks

In Rocket Money, go to the "Subscriptions" tab. It will list every recurring charge automatically. Look for:

  • Streaming services you haven't watched in months
  • Free trials you forgot to cancel
  • Duplicate services (two music apps, two cloud storage plans)
  • Apps that have been auto-renewing for years that you don't use

You can cancel subscriptions directly inside the app โ€” Rocket Money handles the cancellation for you.

Step 3: Ask ChatGPT to Analyze Your Spending

Once Rocket Money shows you your monthly categories, copy the numbers and bring them to ChatGPT:

"Here's my family's monthly spending breakdown: groceries $800, dining out $450, streaming $120, utilities $200, clothing $300, kids' activities $250. We bring home $6,000/month after taxes. Where are we overspending compared to typical family budgets, and what's a realistic spending plan for us?"

ChatGPT will compare your numbers to general guidelines (like the 50/30/20 rule) and suggest specific cuts โ€” not in a preachy way, but practically, based on what you told it.

Step 4: Set Spending Limits

Back in Rocket Money, go to "Budgets" and set monthly limits for your problem categories. The app will alert you when you're getting close to the limit โ€” before you go over, not after.

Start with just two or three categories. Trying to control everything at once is overwhelming and usually fails. Pick the one or two areas where you overspend the most and focus there first.

โœ… Try It Now

Download Rocket Money and connect one bank account or credit card. Just look โ€” don't judge. Spend 5 minutes exploring where your money actually went last month. Most people find at least one subscription they'd completely forgotten about in the first 60 seconds.
